Particularly since the glitz is attached to some of the most lethal talent ever witnessed. If there was a buzz about what Ovechkin would do in the breakaway challenge, it was elevated to "brood X" cicada volume afterwards.

The Malkin factor was only the first element of the unexpected. Watching him clean the sunglasses and squirt the water bottle for Alex was a wrinkle straight out of WWE's handbook. Who could have expected that with all the swirl preceding the event about the bitter feud between the two players.

Secondly, his get-up was priceless. With a look that melded Bono with Crocodile Dundee (complete with a Canadian flag jutting out of the hat) Alex surprised us even more by grabbing Malkin's stick for a double barreled sortee on goal that must've had the poor goalie as dumbstruck as the viewers. Then, to ratchet up the surprise even higher, he casts away his normal right handed stick and takes his shot with Malkin's left handed one.

As the rebound shot trickled over the goal line, the image of him twirling away to partake in one of his trademark jubilant celebrations will forever be etched on the psyche of those who witnessed it, if for no other reason than it was adorned by those gaudy sunglasses.

With a personality as dynamic as his ability... all must hail Alexander the Gr8.

All Star Break Take

I can remember when I used to get excited before All Star games. I can even remember when, once, I was excited during an All Star game.

But usually I found myself a little miffed by how differently the game is contested compared to a game that actually counts. A little at a time I just sorta drifted away until my interest in the game had fully evaporated. But the All Star break still serves a purpose for me.

Much like New Year's day or an anniversary, it's a moment to reflect back on what has come before it, and to project ahead to what may come next.

As this team embarked on the 2008-09 season, there was a different feeling in my gut. Somehow, I was able to shed the protective layer of caution that had become my cozy companion after so many jarring disappointments of years ago and found the conviction to push all of my emotional chips to the center of the table.

This squad is either gonna break my heart, or make my decade.

Buying into a team that deeply is a recipe for almost certain disaster, but as we reach the quasi-halfway mark of the season, I gotta say:

The plan is right on schedule.

Now, play time is over. The real competition begins when this break is complete. The good teams in the league know when it's "go time". I can't wait to see if these guys in red can set aside the surges and lapses of the first half and settle in and grind out a solid finish to the season.

For what it's worth, I'm betting they will.

Alex in Chains

I'm the man in the box
Can't control my stick
Won't you come and save me?

With both Alex's becoming so familiar with the penalty box, Theo just couldn't save them against the Senators.

There'll be no weeping and gnashing of teeth from me on this one. It was the back end of a "two games in two nights" affair, with a nice break ahead, and they just played a stupid, unfocused game. It's not like they're in do-or-die mode.

One player who was very focused (on winning the Academy Award) was Jarkko Ruutu. His performance on the play that banished Mike Green to the box for roughing was Shatner-esque. Soccer players from around the world must have rejoiced at the way he collapsed to the ice as though he'd been shot by a sniper. I'm sure they'll advise him to get helped off the ice in apparent agony by team-mates next time only to come back ready to go for his next shift. What a pest that guy is...

So it's break time for a while so the league can showcase the turd that is the All-Star game. I'm hoping the guys get some good down-time (including Backstrom, who wisely opted out of the Young Stars game). Maybe they'll return more with a renewed mental sharpness.

Minor Penalty- NHL, 2 Minutes for Nonsense

Just about everybody who sits near me in section 403 has heard the rant. I blurt it reflexively every time I see the a puck loft over the glass from the defensive end.

I hate that stupid "delay of game" penalty.

I can't stand compulsory penalties in general (so you can pretty much guess where you can shove your trapezoid). There always used to be a thing known as "point of emphasis" by which teams could be put on notice that enforcement of certain elements of the rule book would be heightened or more closely scrutinized. Why isn't this approach used in delay of game?

Frankly, I've seen it botched too many times to forgive the mandatory nature of this call. Besides that, only about 10% of the delay calls actually have any merit. With pucks rolling, skittering, and bouncing the way they do, it's inevitable that some pucks will come off the blade in unintended ways. This, regrettably, only results in power plays and momentum shifts which get sprinkled randomly throughout games.

Just ask Alex Ovechkin.

There he sat in the penalty box, helplessly, as the zebras inverted the momentum. It makes me nuts.

You could just see the vengeance in his game when he got back on the ice. If it takes a zebra to take away momentum, it only takes a rabid phenom of a hockey player to steal it back.

Not a pretty win.... aw hell. Both teams were acutely alert about passing opportunities and defensive responsibilities alike. This time the Capitals get a crack at it.

Look out Bruins, this Caps team isn't another one of those cup-cakes you've been feasting on this year. (Maple Leafs, Islanders, Senators, Southeast teams...) The Caps will be a much tougher test for Boston, without a doubt. And I'm quite sure the home crowd will be in full throat to reinforce that.

This game is one of those that Caps fans have circled on the calender. A win for the home team would shrink Boston's lead in the conference standings to less than a handful of games. In fact, as the standings currently sit, the Bruins are the only team to chase. With so much season left to play, it sure would be nice to see the Caps perform a little reality check on the Bruins as to what the level of competition is this year in the East.

Side note: Ever have a friend/acquaintance who was a die hard Bruins fan? I did. Aren't they some of the most pompous and obnoxious people on Earth? For this exact reason I've always had an extra ounce of bile for Boston.

Side side note: Check out this article from Puck Daddy for a recount of one of the most infamous incidents in modern hockey history. The special of the night was turnovers, and that was served with a generous helping of perimeter shots that had no threat of going into the net. The way they've played for the last week, you'd think they were trying to win the shot clock total rather than the goal total.

It was the first game this year that I thought was a stinker.

There's precious little time to turn things around with a game against a rival on the road (and the back end of consecutive games). A much tighter defensive effort (ahem.... Karl and Juice) is gonna be needed to keep the slide from turning into a free-fall.

Back to the little things, guys. In fact, every point he makes is unquestionably true.

Yet, I have the complete opposite opinion. I'd jump into that Atlantic division scenario so fast, there'd be a sonic boom.

Before I get to why I'm for this idea, I need to digress for a second about the article that Caps Kremlin is responding to. When I became a hockey fan 25 years (or so) ago, the NHL was a league that was steeped in it's majestic history. I loved the fact that its divisions were named for pioneering men that advanced the game from it's infancy. It made me go back and learn about them and, along the way, I learned of many of the other men that mattered so deeply to the league. Teams were located in established places and stocked with recognizeable players.

I long for those days again.

I hated every malodorous, vile, soul-less opponent in the Patrick division, and I resented how they fought to spoil our dreams.

Truth be told, as much as I try to watch hockey with my cerebrum, I always end up watching it with my brain-stem. If you've been visiting this blog for even a short while, you know my arch enemies are the Flyers and Penguins. I just can't, for the life of me, get worked up about the Panthers or the Thrashers.

I want my real enemies back.

Sure, it would make things a lot tougher. But, just maybe, it would make the Caps tougher too.

What Happened?

I was being distracted by a member of the fairer sex during the Montreal game, so I didn't get to focus on the TV very much. Winning all the time feeds that engine like crazy.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but there was a basketball game before the Caps played, and the building was on the warm side, so the ice surface looked like it was not in peak condition. Pucks were rolling, players were whiffing on passes and shots, and combine that with the pressure system the Rangers used... the game was somewhat less than elegant.

Kudos to the Caps for matching New York's effort and being able to clamp down defensively at 5 on 5. Considering the rather puzzling way that games are sometimes officiated nowadays, it comes as little surprise the special teams would determine the outcome. Mike Green is such a difference maker on the power play that it almost can't be overstated. Add him into a dynamic with Backstrom and the snipers... it's practically unfair.

Close, gritty games like this one also bring to light a wrinkle that's seldom mentioned when this team is discussed. The league-wide impression of the Caps is one of wide open attacking (run-and-gun) style. I think it's time to take the "wide open" part out of the description. As the season has worn on, our forwards, from the top down, have become extremely effective back-checkers, and our defense (even in light of the decimated roster) has been pretty smart about when to jump. Certainly, these guys love to attack, but I see more and more balance in Boudreau's system than most people outside of DC have been willing to give him credit for.

Comically, gritty games can also reveal a wrinkle that I will never forget, but hope to never see again. I could go into a mini-diatribe about how our stars get run all the time to the point where they have to take matters into their own hands- but I've been there, done that. Instead we focus on the bout between Alex Semin and Marc Staal:

You are looking live at the cafeteria of Columbia Middle School for the match-up of the day. Looks like tempers are starting to flare up over there by the cookie stand! There's shoving! And it looks like we have a rumble... they're wrestling, Marc just insulted Alex's momma. Marc slips! Alex is loose! (slap, slap, slap, slap). And the teachers are there to break it up. Looks like a trip to the Principal's office for Alex.

I don't mind that he was willing to show some spark. But if he never does that again...

Grumpiest Win of the Year

OK. I realize it's the only game they've played this year... but it was fugly.

The refs stunk, the linesmen stunk, the goal judge stunk, the players stunk (and by golly, if I could get down there I'd have stunk too!)

The 3 stars according to Nation's Capital Blog:

Verizon EMS crew

Bruce the organ player

Wes the PA announcer

At least a bull fight only has one matador. That was about as putrid of a defensive effort by both teams as I have seen in a long time. It seems like our home town team thinks that there are some opponents that they can just coast against. With only a few exceptions (Lecavalier, Halpern, Bradley, Clark) I thought this game was conducted by a lot of disinterested players. Not since the game against St. Louis have I left a winning game in more sour spirits.

My thoughts go out to some former Caps after this game. First and foremost, the whole experience of the game changed when Jamie Heward went down. I hope I never have to see something like that again. After a minute I was pleading for him to get up, after 7 minutes I was dejected and frightened. I wish with all my heart that he's OK. As far as Jeff Halpern is concerned, now that I can see that he is over his injuries... let's do away with this dalliance with other clubs and bring him back here where he belongs. And with Steve Eminger... he's getting the "whoop" treatment? Please refer to my previous post for my feelings on that.

9 wins in 10 games... why am I so bitter?

Maybe I'm a curmudgeon, but I'm not as grumpy as I sound. It was so exhilarating as this team began to coalesce like clouds churning together to form a devastating storm. Even as the force of the storm lashes strongly into the new year, we can only speculate about the results. However, the results for 2008 are in...

And they are delicious.

This team came from decrepit jalopy status to become a high-performance street rod right before our eyes this year. I think it may have been one of the most incredible calender years I've witnessed in 27 years of being a Caps fan. Although the high point of that time came in 1998, the floundering follow-up performance at the beginning of the next season muted the memories of Juneau and Hasek by the end.

The "hunt-you-down relentlessly" attitude that Bruce Boudreau has imparted on this squad, along with all of the hardware and accolades that were handed out to the team is a refreshing change of pace from the dismissive mockery that we've become all-too-accustomed to. It's nice to be considered a team to be reckoned with.

Finally, in 2008, I could hold my head high and talk some trash.

Maybe in 2009 I can strut around like a peacock.

Three Stars: Capitals vs. Sabres

Sometimes I think the guys from the media who select the 3 stars of the game take the easy way out by perusing the stat line and issuing the awards based on that. Against the Sabres, Brian Helmer was given first star status but that just doesn't jive with what I saw with my own two eyes. So, having said that, here are the the stars according to Nation's Capital Blog:

Alexander Ovechkin

Viktor Kozlov

Derek Roy

Derek Roy didn't even show up on the score-sheet, but he had a very good puck possession game and consistently moved the puck through the neutral zone. Alex Ovechkin just showed up all over the place, and clearly was the best player on the ice (he's gonna be my #1 star a lot). That breakaway goal he scored was just as sick as the breakaway he disrupted on the back check.

Helmer? Nice game kid. Glad you could mix in some assists while your game is coming around.

More Than Just A Porn-Stache

If some people around the league think of Mike Gartner as the guy who played over 1400 NHL games and never won the Cup, I'm here to tell you he was so much more than that.

Mike Gartner was a elite quality finisher and an electrifying skater. Had he played on teams with a better cast around him (sadly, that counts for his time here too) he could have been a top 15 all-time scoring list candidate. Instead, he resides at the #27 spot.

To prove my point about how lethal he was as a goal scorer, the all-time list illustrates it perfectly. To find the next player on the list with more goals than Gartner (708) you'd have to scroll up the list all the way into the top 10 with Phil Esposito (717) and then you'd have to scroll up four more places to find the guy after that. That's world class.

Conversely, when you look at the list to find guys who have gathered points with fewer assists as part of the total, you'd have to plunge all the way down the list to #45 (Teemu Selanne). Conclusion? Gartner was there to put the puck in.

His offensive consistency was unparalleled. He holds the record for most 30 goal seasons which he accomplished in 17 of his 19 seasons in the league. He was as adept at being where the rebounds and scrambles started for tip-ins as he was for his dazzling speed on breakaways.

So, in recognition of all this, on December 28, the Washington Capitals will raise his #11 jersey to the rafters. And, in spite of all I just pointed out...

I'm not sure about how to feel about this.

For 20 years since he last played in Washington they've seen fit to issue #11 to scrubs like Tim Bergland and Jeff Nelson yet suddenly NOW it's worthy of all-time retirement?

The Capitals rarely seem to "get it" when it comes to this kind of thing. As much of a fixture as Yvon Labre has been in the organization, the fact that his number 7 is retired is laughable and mildly embarrassing. In fact, the only retired number the Caps have that I'm totally comfortable about is Rod Langway's #5. (Dale Hunter supporters crush me on this routinely).

Yes, I'll cheer loudly and appreciatively for a guy who deserves the applause richly. But it just seems like this ceremony just arrived out of the blue.

Perhaps the organization could take a pointer from one of the most history rich hockey organizations in the NHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Although they were the first to retire a number after Ace Bailey's tragic encounter with Eddie Shore, they have the fewest number of retired numbers in the league. Instead, they've chose to "honor" 13 players in the rafters while their numbers remain in circulation.

I wish this was how the Capitals did it. With guys like Olaf Kolzig and Peter Bondra coming up for consideration, I'd just like to have them be gracefully recognized without all the hand-wringing about their worthiness for retired number status.

Bend it Like Ovechkin

After three quick Ranger's goals I thought "They left the Caps too much time to mount the comeback". After the fourth goal I felt they were defeated. After the debacle in Philly could you blame me? But then, one of the most improbable goals Ovechkin will ever score knuckle-balled its way past Lundqvist like a guided missile.

Ovechkin, who's game is ballistic by nature, took that to mean that he could bring the team back.

I'm sure if you're the Rangers, you'd have to feel like you've put in a good night's work when you jump out to a 4-0 lead. It's only natural to let off the pedal a little bit. But with one curve ball of a goal, the snake-bitten road team became charmed.

The force of will that one player had was enough to inspire a team and simultaneously lift them to unreasonable results. (Did you hear the cheering from the crowd when he tied the game? I think we're gathering a following out there!)

There are two things I've said consistently all season long. 1) Never count the Caps out of a game, and 2) Alex Ovechkin is the Captain of the Washington Capitals.

Clarkie, its way past time for you to pass the mantle.

Niittymaki, Brent Johnson Combine to Deflate Capitals

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Full of loops and twists, slow and difficult climbs, and effortless and frightening plunges.

Right now I'm about halfway through a loop about Michael Nylander. I look back about two weeks ago when I came to his defense at the suggestion of moving him out of Washington for Khabibulin.

Right now I'd trade him for a hot dog at the concession stand.

Maybe, with luck, this will loop back into a positive frame by April.

Puck drops in Philly in one hour as this is being written. I detest the Philadelphia Flyers. But when Ovechkin is needed to stand up for the other star player when liberties are being taken on him...

Something's not right here.

Full kudos to him for charging in to the defense of his fallen line mate, but when everything was said and done... everything was said, but nothing was done. No penalties from the officials (not even to OV), and nobody really held David Backes truly accountable for his cross check that put Semin out of the game. Donald Brashear went out looking for takers, but no one would play.

I think I'm calling my hockey team soft.

It's clear that the officials just aren't policing the game according to the rule book. So when the policing has to be issued by the old time code of hockey, who among our ranks has the snarl to set things right?

Our goalies get run, Semin and Backstrom take slashes and cross checks, and I'm beginning to get a bit frustrated here. Did the playoff series against Philadelphia teach us nothing last year? If the zebras aren't going to be the deterrent, does that mean Ovechkin has to be?

Really?

St. Louis: Gateway to the Jest

The St. Louis Blues are a joke. And not even a funny one.

The Western Conference cellar-dwellers come into DC after losing 4 in a row to match up with a Capitals team on a 4 game winning streak, a Capitals team that just doesn't lose at home, and a Capitals team that has just been admonished by their GM and coach.

If I were Blues coach Andy Murray, I'd be slipping an envelope to referees Mike Leggo and Kelly Sutherland.

When your marquis player is Keith Tkachuk, who is an echo of his former self, the outlook isn't rosy.

Then, to add injury to insult, the Blues come to town in beat up condition. #1 goalie Manny Legace is down (thank you Sarah Palin), as is Erik Johnson (no, not the virtuoso guitarist), Andy MacDonald, and several others.

It's no wonder they're giving up goals like crazy. Defenseman Barret Jackman sums it up when he says "When you're giving up five, six goals a game, it's hard to win". It seems like he might be becoming contagious too 'cuz I saw Tom Poti do it tonight as well.

Garbage goals rule the night for both teams (with the exception of OV's first goal). But, as I'm fond of saying, garbage goals are worth one- just like pretty goals.

Speaking of pretty goals, Joey MacDonald was grumbling "Son Of a Bitch" after The SOB line cashed in on Semin's sick behind-the-back pass to left wing.

Boudreau didn't just shuffle lines and "D" on Tuesday- he put them in the blender and whirled them. I guess chemistry isn't as big a deal when you've been through the kind of shakeups the team has seen this year (but please don't split the top line up!)

Boyd Gordon has apparently decided to attack the net- and got results.

Never, under any circumstances, can Karl Alzner be allowed out of the NHL. Aside from his solid play, suddenly the Juice is loose!

Matt Bradley = punching bag.

Jon Sim must die. He kills us every time we play him.

I guess the Caps relaxed a bit in the third period, and Brent Johnson was less acrobatic than his last few games (no shocker), but in the end- Alex the Gr8 saved the day.

For all the rancor on the other blogs about who the team MVP is... I give you exhibit AO.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://nationscapitalblog.blogspot.com/2008/12/oh-gee-ov-in-ot.html' title='Oh Gee! It sure was contested like one. Very much like they did against Boston, the Caps found success by relentlessly pressuring the puck-carrier from one end of the ice to the other. Montreal couldn't find a groove to work with until late in the game.

The pressure didn't relent any when the team was shorthanded either. (OK, I can't be quiet. Does Bill McCreary hate the Capitals? Maybe familiarity breeds contempt, but every time a ref makes me want to detonate, it's always one of the dinosaurs like McCreary, Koharski, or Devorski.) Umm, yeah the pressure. I love the aggressive "come out and get you" style that Bruce has them playing on the PK. I think the "hang back and take away passing lanes" approach is bad for the psyche. Especially when you're facing a power play from Montreal that is flat-out broken.

Congrats to Simeon Varmalov, errr Varlamov (not only was Locker flubbing it, but Lisa Hillary was butchering it in the post game- to the point she stopped even trying to say it). It did take a while for him to be tested to the degree that I could see what he was made of, but they said he was aggressive, and they were right. I like aggressive. That's why I love Bruce. Fearless.

In a sport where courage is mandatory, it's worth noting that courage and fearlessness are not the same.

Stretching the Limits

The prospect of having to fall back on website producer Brett "Stretch" Leonhardt would definitely have been bad. But boy would it ever have been cool.

When word started to leak out hours before the game that our esteemed co-host of the Capitals Report was getting a jersey, I thought to myself simultaneously " Oh shit, that's awesome". I'll bet that's pretty much what it felt like for him as he sat on the bench in the first period. On a night when there was so many things worth writing about, I just couldn't start anywhere but here.

But, there's plenty to talk about from a game where all the breaks went the Cap's way. Make no mistake, the Sens play was not reflected in the score. It makes me think back to the mildly annoying clip that gets run on the Jumbo-tron where Al Pacino says "The inches we need are all around us". Ottawa just couldn't find the inches on this night and Washington seemed to have a tape measure full of 'em.

What a difference it makes when the SOB line (Semin, Ovechkin, Backstrom) is back together. I firmly believe that this line is the most lethal combination this city has ever seen. How crazy is it that Backstrom could get three assists and Ovechkin could get two goals and neither of them could crack the "3 stars of the night". That's when you know things are going well for you. OV was his normal self, but Nicklas just shined against the Sens. Confidence is just oozing out of this guy right now. He seems to see every opportunity on the ice, and now that he's shooting more often, opponents are that much more tentative about how to defend him. The power play goals by OV and Green were essentially composed by Backstrom's wizardry.

And what a joy it is to be able to watch Mike Green do his thing. After watching Tyler Sloan struggle to make a smart outlet pass out of the defensive zone, it's such a change of pace to watch Green, who doesn't even need to pass it out. Put the puck on Mike Green's stick, and it's nearly a guarantee that it's gonna end up safely in the offensive zone. I'm not saying he's Paul Coffey, I'm just sayin'...

Welcome back Sergei! Now it's starting to look like the Washington Capitals again. Apparantly the old fart hasn't forgotton how to play the game. With all the skills he brings to the table, I like our teams chances even if Stretch was playing in goal.

But it wasn't Stretch against the Sens, it was number one goalie and number one star Brent Johnson. He and his posts denied almost every opportunity that Ottawa had (and as I mentioned earlier- there were plenty). This guy is playing at an unbelievable level right now. I didn't think he had this kind of talent in him. Not only is he strong positionally, but he has displayed some remarkable imagination on how to keep pucks out of the net. I hope this guy can stay healthy enough to extend his streak of brilliance.

Hockey Night in Canada featuring the Washington Capitals again. They can't get enough of this team up there. And neither can we.

All Star Voting Bandwagon

I've been voting all along, but tonight I will jump on the bandwagon and fire off 10 text votes during the intermissions. Sure, the programming and advertising in the US can be a wee bit redundant, but it serves as a tonic for my acute case of Caps myopia. Only in this objective medium can I truly gauge the footprint of my team relative to the buzz effect of the entire league. (Trust me, the Caps are routinely a topic of conversation on the network.)

Featured shows include vignettes of NHL Captains (sorry Chris, haven't seen one on you yet), and there is also another feature this year called "Voices" that profiles the play-by-play radio personalities for different teams. Last night, Steve Kolbe was given the honor of being featured.

The program included the obligatory testimonials from Joe Benanati and former announcer Ron Weber, but it was interesting to see the "off the ice" side of our seemingly over-caffeinated radio voice. It includes his youthful foray into goaltending (he's seemed like a bigger hot-head than a young Olie Kolzig), his love of the Caps while growing up, and his passion for outdoor endeavors such as fishing and archery.

Proir to watching the show, I think I knew more about PA announcer Wes than about Steve Kolbe. But one thing I did know was what a stark contrast he was to his predecessor. Ron Weber, bless his heart, was the only voice this team had ever known until 1997. But his meandering, behind the play style could sometimes get a bit frustrating.

Enter Steve Kolbe at the beginning of the Capitals magical run in 97-98. Raw, a little ragged around the edges, but loud and bursting with enthusiasm. I loved him right off the bat. Perhaps Benanati has more savvy, but no one goes more balls-to-the-wall into a microphone than the Ice Man.

Unholy Alliance?

The buzz around the hockey blogosphere these days is centered around the declaration at ThePensBlog calling for a movement to join with Caps fans and elevate Alex Ovechkin past the Canadiens players and into the starting line-up at the year's All Star Game. An excerpt of this call to action follows:

"In the coming month, Penguins fans and Caps fans from around the world will form the most unholy alliance to date. And we will be launching the largest internet battle in the history of the NHL."

Somewhat surprisingly, Pens faithful appear to be embracing the idea. Peerless Prognosticator and Capitals Kremlin have taken positions supporting it from a Capitals point of view. My way of thinking on the matter runs like this:

Nuh-uh. Ain't gonna happen.

For all the Ovechkin well-wishers out there who want the rightful owner of the left wing All Star starter status to get his rightful due, I gotta say, not at this price.

This game is a steaming pile to begin with and the voting process is laughable, as we can all plainly see. Do you think I'd be willing to set aside years of carefully cultivated pettiness and resentment just for that? Are you actually suggesting that I should go online and cast votes for Captain Lipstick? Just looking at his overpromoted face makes me nauseous. Maybe Malkin (yeah right, I doubt that too) but no way, no how for Crosby.

For all the objective minded people who can see past the uniforms and make rational decisions... I applaud you. I'm just not one of you. I wish the best for OV, but a man has to stand on his principles sometimes.

Undoin' the Bruins

Opportunity knocks. Guys named Alex who play in Washington answer. Can we officially begin the campaign to trade for every player named Alexander in the league? Ovechkin, Semin, Giroux (ok, technically the last guy is Alexandre, but who's splitting hairs).

It was so refreshing to see Semin in the lineup as well as Poti (even though I did think he coulda poked the Lucic goal out of harm's way). Those guys made a big difference as the Caps found themselves needing to play a possession game to diffuse an especially hot Bruins team.

This was a huge and unexpected victory for the locals, and it only serves to re-confirm that the Caps have enough hockey horsepower to gallop with any team in the league.

One point of concern however is the health of (let's all just go ahead and admit it) number one goalie Brent Johnson. Without his acrobatics against Boston there would clearly have been different results and we all hope he springs back to form.

Bruins are Brewin'

Who knew the Bruins were this good? Being a Caps fan, when I think of Boston I think of Tim Thomas getting pulled twice in the same game in a ten goal barrage and Shane Hnidy getting abused by Donald Brashear. (seriously, look it up again at youtube, in retrospect it's hilarious)

Next thing ya know, Boston is on a tear and facing off against our beloved Capitals. Any great coach, if pressed will admit that its good to pick up whatever points you can when the odds are against you and you're trying to get things right. Even if half the guys that've been missing come back for the next game, let's face it, they're still a team that'll be trying to get it right. So far, the results have been pretty good, but I'll be rooting extra hard for a win against Boston.

Yeah, I hate Pittsburgh and Philly more, but the Bruins are a solid number three in my book. Besides that, these Caps can claim more than just the #3 playoff seed when this whole thing is said and done. Any ground they could make up in the conference would be critical. How nice would it be to put Boston on ice with this band of ragtag misfits? Let's go Caps!

Charmed or Cursed?

Hockey Night in Canada featuring our Washington Capitals. Sweet. And the solid effort against the Maple Leafs was even sweeter, right?

Tell that to Eric Fehr. Is this team charmed because they're earning victories with such a decimated roster, or cursed because each game sacrifices another player?

Thankfully, the Washington Capitals have installed enough organizational continuity to be able to plug in players with little or no NHL experience and still find a way to succeed. It's one thing to say you use the same systems at both levels, but the evidence was on display against Toronto on Saturday night. I didn't see any sign of the "too cute" Caps the coach Boudreau gets so piqued with. Instead, I saw tenacious denial-of-space and positional focus in every zone on the ice.

Fortunately, Alex Ovechkin didn't spontaneously combust out of sheer frustration. Here's a guy who's become quite accustomed to having his hard work be rewarded with results. The only results he seemed to get on Saturday were near-misses and tiki-tack penalties. But the lasting memory for me was the play when he turned right into harm's way as pesky Ryan Hollweg lined him up for destruction, only to find that he was the one who got blew up. That's why I'll always contend that Ovechkin is unique in the NHL. Chris Clark should just go ahead and defer his captaincy to the obvious leader of the team.

Speaking of frustration... I'm always looking very closely at body language and demenor of atheletes. The TV cameras were pointed directly on Brooks Laich when they announced his goal was disallowed. Obviously I, as a fan, was disappointed by the decision but Brooks just replaced his mouthpiece and skated back into position. I thought it showed class and dignity and I applaud him for it.

Dear GMGM

Today you called up defenseman Sean Collins from the Bears to play the Maple Leafs. Sure, I'll make Mike Green look conservative by comparison and I'll probably be in the box more than Dale Hunter, but darn it- I won't go alone!

I'm just sayin'.

Nylander Meander?

Quite often this year the subject of Michael Nylander's status on the Caps has been bandied about (most recently, and quite graciously as a comment on my last post). Originally, the appeal of moving Nylander, or "Circles" as a friend of mine calls him, was based on the organizational depth at center the team is blessed with. After the atrocious performance of Jose Theodore at the beginning of the season it was only natural for the Khabibulin question to come up.

There are so many facets to consider on this one, and I'll do my best to point them out. Maybe at the end of this post I'll have settled in on what I really think about this idea.

Firstly, there is the issue of the "no movement" clause in his contract. I'm pretty sure we can dispose of that barrier out of hand. I'd have to think, in the post Wirtz era in Chicago, even I'd accept a trade to the Hawks. He's been there before in his career, and I'm sure he'd recieve a warm reception.

Then, there's the consideration of the Capital's goaltending position. It's been documented right here in this blog how I thought of Theodore's performance in October. He didn't get the nickname in Colorado of "Jose Three-or-more" for no reason. But the reality is that he went further in the playoffs last season in a tougher conference than Huet did, and was very solid at the end of last season. Did his turnaround in November indicate that he's acclimating to his new "D" and returning to form? Can Brent Johnson maintain the level that he's exhibited so far?

Could Khabibulin add more to the goal than would be subtracted by losing a veteran forward?

From a salary and term-length perspective I can see some value in making this move, so what it boils down to is this: Chicago and Washington both have designs on making a run at the Cup this year. Would this move strengthen the position of the club right now?

This brings up another reason that trading Nylander has been a hot topic as of late.

He's playing like a bucket full of ass.

He has very little speed left, and he doesn't seem to have any awareness that the other team has a goal to shoot at. But what he has, and cannot use right now, is imagination. With the abscence of Semin, Green, and Federov, relentless effort trumps finesse with the Caps. Someone who's playing chess looks very out-of-place alongside a bunch of guys playing rugby.

However, bring back some of those other guys and Nylander begins to fit more into the equation. I'd hate to see the Caps come up short in the playoffs this year because they were one veteran play short of victory. Finishers need passes.

So I guess, now that I'm at the end of this post, I've arrived at the conclusion that I'm OK with riding Johnny and Theo into May and hopefully June. Good thing they don't leave these decisions up to me....

Honor Roll

The Kudos for Caps campaign is in full swing in the NHL and AHL recently. As you can imagine, I'm deeply concerned about the serious situation that underlies Alex's sudden return home. I think Bruce Boudreau spoke eloquently when he said:

“He had to go and he wanted to be near him, but if you know Alex, he doesn’t want to leave his teammates, So that’s always a struggle, but in the end, he knows what he needs to do—and that’s family first.”

I couldn't agree more.

Sadly, this type of situation occupies needless hours of sportstalk radio, whether the athlete misses games due to childbirth, unwell relatives, or even family crisis. Without fail, this leads to hand-wringing amongst fans about where priorities should be aligned, but to me, this one is a no brainer. Consider the fact that the man Alex is going back to be with has propagated some of the most absurdly talented genes ever to have been passed along to the next two generations of descendants.

Of course he made the right decision.

Consider what part of the season it is, and how few games are on the docket over the next couple of weeks. Not to mention that close family like that is just intrinsically more valuable than the sometimes myopically over-exaggerated bond that pro teams form during a competitive season. When it all boils down, we're all accountable to our own flesh and blood more-so than the ones we've chosen to bleed for.

I wish the best for your family Alex, and I will cheer as loud as I can when you return.

Go West Young Team

Inter-league play in baseball doesn't get underway until mid-season, but it's cranked up to full swing already in this early NHL campaign. With five games played, the Caps have already dispatched two Western Conference contestants, and are slated to cast their fortunes against three more this week.

Of the upcoming roadies against the Flames, 'Yotes, and Stars, the matchup that most grabs my attention most is the first game against Calgary. I see this Flame's team as an exciting up-and-down team that has enough veteran experience and star power to provide an excellent barometer for how far the Caps have progressed in their ascent to respectability.

Phaneuf, Iginila and Kiprusoff command enough respect on their own, but (like the Caps) their secondary cast of characters is above average and could make an impact. Add to that the fact that this team as starved for points, and I'd say our boys are in for a dogfight.

Tom Poti's injury forced the Caps to recall Karl Alz... errrr... Sami Lepis.... errr.... Tyler Sloan from Hersey. Yeah, umm Tyler Sloan. That's the one. Three things about this recall actually make sense. He's both huge (6'4) and mature (27 years old), plus, he's a Calgary guy (like Mike Green) and should rise up to play in his own hometown, and, on top of that, this will be his NHL (regular season) debut. I'm thinking this guy is gonna be pretty fired up.

Give 'em hell Caps, and we'll be waiting here at home to exchange the "C" of red with the "sea of red".

Teens Not Keen

Attention Capitals players: If you are wearing a jersey with a number in the teens, please see me after class to discuss your impact in the game against the Devils.

C'mon guys, we're counting on your skills to make a difference this season. As a fan, I've been more than pleased that the early-season sloppiness that we've become conditioned to expect in the past is largely absent this year. What hasn't been absent is the home crowd at Cap's games. The difference between October '07 and '08 is gratifying.

Big "ups" to Brent Johnson for the best Caps goaltending performance in this young season, and to Alex Semin for his continued dominance. Federov is also starting to win me over as a "D" man with his puck moving skills.

Alex Ovechkin was held to only "glimpses of greatness" but almost no offensive impact. If history is any indication when it comes to situations like this, God help the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, because OV will stew about this game until he has a chance to rectify the situation on the ice.

Even without GR8's contribution, these Caps were able to mount a comeback for a miraculous 4th time in 5 games! (even though it didn't hold up in Atlanta) That, to me, is ridiculously amazing. You have to give these guys a puncher's chance to win on any night under any circumstances. And when they iron out the kinks in the goaltending/defensive dynamic...

The sky is the limit.

Much respect for the Devils for an impressive road win. I was as aggravated as you were when John Erskine was called for delay of game even though the puck rode off the rink on Miro Satan's stick instead of Erskine's. (And I did wonder if Bradley's punching bag imitation would have an adverse effect on the game).

But, in spite of all that, our guys showed a ton of heart (and I'm convinced that OV's rude treatment of Malkin was a big key).

It all just confirms what this teams showed you at the end of last season. That's the only way to explain the Canuck's visit to DC on Monday.

I thought the ugliest thing about Vancouver was their historically hideous jerseys until I got to witness this debacle. Three shots in more than two periods? Six minutes into the third period I leaned over to a nearby fan and quipped that "Even if Brent Johnson was perched on top of his goal like Snoopy, the Caps would still be winning this game".

Every imaginable break went the Cap's way tonight. Every missed pass inadvertently landed on another Cap's stick, every overlapping pass scheme led to sustained offensive zone time. And the Cap's karma even extended past the game to the ride home.

(I swear I am not making this up) The vehicle I drive has a lazy fuel gauge, so, as I drove home from the game, I ignored the "running on fumes" reading on my dashboard and favored my odometer method. Well, that was a bad idea. As my fuel-starved vehicle coasted lifelessly to a stop, it came to rest.... directly in front of the gas pump I was aiming for.

Everything, it seems, was going right for Caps players and fans on this night.

Told You!

I'm sure THN writer Adam Proteau lobbied for this:

Favorite Memories From Opening Night

1) OV's reaction to seeing his mug on the Jumbo-Tron

2) Patrick Kane being dragged aroung the rink by his skate like a pull toy by Shaone Morrisonn.

3) Hysteria at Verizon at the 4th goal.

4) Female Caps fan approaching George McPhee outside the arena with "GMGM! Please make a deposit immediately before attempting to make another withdrawal. I mean, seriously.... Early impressions of Olie Kolzig in his first season as starter were of him giving himself brain-freeze from standing on his head all the time. Consequently, he'll receive a hero's welcome later this season despite 50 games of marginal play last year. Ya see how it works Jose?

Caps faithful went into this season with bravado, knowing that our team could stand in blow-for-blow with the best in the league. After 26 seconds of the home opener, 18,000 people were on pins and needles every time a shot came toward our goal. With one bad goal, the vibe switched from optimistic confidence to hesitant relief in the victory.

In all fairness, Theodore made a handful of nearly acrobatic saves as the game progressed (thanks in large part to the Cap's newfound propensity for taking garbage penalties). But you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

Thanks a lot for letting all the air out of my balloon in the first week of the season. You kind of get the feeling that there's a new-ness and an energy swirling around both of these franchises. It's almost as though the Hawks looked at the template that the Caps were establishing last season and jumped right in to follow along.

The comparisons between the young, up-and-coming talent were illustrated in a very obvious way last season as Nicklas Backstrom dueled it out with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews for the Calder Trophy (which Toews should have won despite the number of missed games).

Sadly and ironically, much of the fresh feeling around the Chicago club was generated after the passing of their longtime owner Bill Wirtz. He was and old-school owner who insisted that Hawk's games be blacked out on TV if the arena wasn't sold out (which it seldom was). Therefore, a recent generation of hockey fans were missing out on exposure to their home team.

Since then, the team has been overhauled into a faster, more energetic group and they served notice that they're ready to compete this year when they signed swift skating defenseman Brian Campbell and that good-for-nothing traitor Cristobal Huet during free agency. I hope the Caps score 10 on him (but I digress).

Just as Chris Clark, Green, and Brooks Laich have emerged for the Caps, the buzz around the NHL is that this season will be a breakout year for Dustin Byfuglien. (pronounced Buff-Linn, but the juvenile in me usually goes with Butt-Fugly-en)

Fortunately for Caps fans, we got a head start on them in this tuning up process, and perhaps the evidence of that will be on display Saturday night.

I Beg To Differ

Whenever I write something that sounds like I'm talking out the wrong orifice, please consider this (paraphrased) quote from former NY Ranger and NY Islander GM Neil Smith on NHL On The Fly last night. The rest of this division stinks.

So, as the Caps sprint away from the pack like Usain Bolt, they'll be contested for the #1 spot by the Montreal Canadiens (eh?) of the Northeast. The Hab's will likely float above the fray while their second tier division mates squabble amongst themselves for the second divisional spot.

Which leaves the real humdinger of a division in the Eastern Conference. The Atlantic. This murderers row of goalies and bruisers (Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, NY Rangers, NJ Devils, NY Islanders) will hopefully pummel their own selves into powder before a winner finally limps out to accept the 3 seed in the conference.

So basically, whether or not the Caps are the best team in the East, they may very well still be sitting on top at the end of the season. (And you should hear some of the answers I've heard) So I thought I could help clear this up a bit.

Ironically, this tradition didn't begin with a former Cap, but with one of our own. None other than Hall of Fame defenseman Larry Murphy. And the original jeer was actually a "whoops".

Opposing teams all had the book on Larry Murphy, who was a finesse player rather than a banger. So the recipe for success was to dump the puck into Larry's corner, then send a player crashing in on the forecheck. This would occasionally cause Murphy to lose his nerve and the result would be "Whoops... gave the puck away!"

The sarcastic jeers from the DC faithful escalated exponentially when Murphy returned as an opposing player and "poof". A tradition is born.

Now I can hear some of you reasonable people wondering aloud "Wait, the fans were doing this to their own Hall of Fame player?"

Please.... never let petty accomplishments like that get in the way of a good sarcastic taunt. In fact, cruel treatment of our own defensemen is almost a part of Capitals culture! (Isn't that right, Milan?)

OK, now that we've got that cleared up, here a handy guide to using whoops in today's NHL

How to Whoop a former Cap (Volume 1)

First rule: Only defenseman get whooped. If you're whooping Jeff Halpern- you're committing a faux pas.

Second rule: Insanely physical players are exempt. If you were whooping Scott Stevens back in the day, I would have politely asked you to "fut the shuck up!" It's never a good idea to taunt a guy who might bludgeon one of your own if provoked.

Last rule: Use it on worthwhile players. If you're whooping Lawrence Nycholat- you're probably taking the tradition to the very extreme. Even a guy like Steve Eminger is a bit below the threshold of whooping. (Although, considering that he's a Flyer, I'm willing to let him hear a few)

So with these guidelines in mind, here is a list of whoopable former Caps:

Sergei Gonchar
Brendan Witt

Long list, huh? Bruce Boudreau has been trotting out a decidedly different looking penalty kill these days. I had to do a double-take at the sight of Ovechkin and Alex Semin logging minutes on the PK. Initial impressions from my first two glances at this experiment ( home game against Carolina) weren't so positive as they both resulted in a Caps goalie fishing the puck out of the back of the net.

Seriously, wasn't there a time when Semin need to stop and ask directions to the defensive zone? And he's on the PK??!

Since then I've seen OV deposit a couple of shorties (the most demoralizing thing a team can do) and I've seen some gloriously entertaining puck "ragging" which relegated the other team's power play into spectators like me. So is this experiment a good idea or not?

Not.

All the conformation I needed for this was provided in the last preseason game when, in a panic-inducing moment, Alex Ovechkin went down after a Bruin's shot tattooed him. (Thankfully he bounced back up) It's a high risk position to put your best offensive players in. And while, if it were me, this experiment would not translate into the regular season- I totally love the stones that Boudreau has to try it.

And it sure makes things more interesting...

A Blog is Born

Craving more "buzz" on the Washington Capitals?
